At PKSA Karate Royal Oak, we proudly refer to our school as a dojang—but what’s the difference between a karate dojo and a dojang?
Both terms refer to a martial arts training hall, but they come from different cultural origins. "Dojo" is a Japanese word commonly used in traditional Japanese martial arts like Karate, Judo, and Aikido. "Dojang," on the other hand, is the Korean equivalent used in martial arts like Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do.
Since our curriculum is rooted in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art with deep traditions in both physical discipline and personal growth, we use dojang to honor that heritage. While many people search for a "karate dojo," they’ll find that our dojang offers the same (and more): expert instruction, a strong sense of community, and a focus on respect, focus, and lifelong development.
Whether you call it a dojo or a dojang, you're welcome here—and we’re excited to help you or your child begin your martial arts journey.
This is a common question that we receive, and there are variations for the pronunciations amongst local schools. However it is pronounced as "doe jong". The ending sounds like "song" or "long".
At PKSA Karate Royal Oak, we’re not just another karate dojo—we’re a family-focused dojang dedicated to helping every student grow, thrive, and achieve their personal best. Here’s what makes us different:
Certified, Passionate Instructors
Our instructors are internationally certified and deeply committed to teaching with integrity, patience, and skill. We don’t just teach techniques—we mentor students in discipline, confidence, and respect.

A True Sense of Community
We treat our students like family. Our dojang is a welcoming, supportive space where everyone is encouraged to grow at their own pace. It’s not about competition—it’s about becoming the best version of yourself.
Emphasis on Character Development
Martial arts should build more than muscle—it should build character. Our curriculum emphasizes respect, focus, perseverance, and confidence—skills that carry over into school, work, and everyday life.
Clean, Safe, Family-Friendly Environment
Our facility is modern, clean, and designed with safety in mind. Families love the inviting atmosphere, and parents appreciate our open-door policy and involvement in their child’s progress.
More Than Karate—It’s Tang Soo Do
While many people search for a “karate dojo,” we proudly teach Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean martial art. It combines the powerful strikes of karate with flowing movements, philosophy, and cultural tradition.
