As students advance through the colors, they develop both physically and mentally. Whether you're just starting or preparing for a black belt, understanding the meaning behind each belt helps you stay focused on your journey.
We proudly serve students from Royal Oak, Troy, Madison Heights, and surrounding areas.
Tang Soo Do Belt Colors & Meanings
Each belt color in Tang Soo Do symbolizes a stage of development, inspired by nature and traditional philosophy:
- White Belt: Symbolizes purity and the beginning of the journey.
- Yellow Belt/Orange Belt: Represents the first rays of sunlight; the student begins to understand the basics.
- Green Belt: Signifies growth and development in skills.
- Red Belt: Indicates further expansion of knowledge, like the blue sky.
- Black Belt (Midnight Blue): Represents maturity and readiness for more advanced training.
- Master Belt (Midnight Blue with Red Stripe): Symbolizes the culmination of hard work and perseverance.
Note: Advancement in belt rank at our dojang requires consistent training, demonstration of skills, and successful testing.
How to Tie Your Martial Arts Belt
Tying your belt correctly is a sign of respect—for yourself, your instructors, and your art. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
- Start by finding the center of the belt.
- Place the center on your stomach, wrap both ends around your back, and bring them back to the front.
- Cross the left end over the right and pull it under both layers.
- Tie a square knot by folding the right end over and through.
